An artist home that sprang to life around a grand piano

Villa Kokkonen is unique among the works of Alvar Aalto: a home designed for a composer. The renovation of Villa Kokkonen will be completed in May 2024. From June 2024, Villa Kokkonen will be open for prebooked group visits.

Architect Alvar Aalto’s (1898–1976) masterpiece Villa Kokkonen was completed in 1969 at the northern end of Lake Tuusula. It was the home of composer Joonas Kokkonen. He lived in the house until his death. Since 1998, the building has been owned by the City of Järvenpää.

Villa Kokkonen is one of the few private residential buildings designed by Alvar Aalto. The dark façade hides a bright interior full of unique details; the curved shape repeats from the façade’s awning recurs in the wall of the entryway and the house’s fireplaces. The interior decoration consists of both custom-made fixtures as well as furniture by Artek.

Visit Villa Kokkonen during summer 2024

In the renovation that begun in 2023, Villa Kokkonen has undergone localized repairs, as well as having a new museum shop and ticket office built. Also the yard and surroundings of Villa Kokkonen will be restored to their original apprearance during this year.

In the summer of 2024, Villa Kokkonen is open to groups via prior reservation on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The tours are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

During Midsummer (21.–24.6.2024) Villa Kokkonen is closed.

How to book a group visit

• During the Summer season (5.6.–27.9.2024) group visits are available from Wednedsday to Friday, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
• The guided tours must be booked no later than 2 weeks prior to the visit.
• Make a reservation at villakokkonen@jarvenpaa.fi
• Group size: 5–20 persons.

Price list

• Entrance fee €15 per person (a valid Museokortti card or Kaikukortti card is also excepted)
• Guidance fee per group €200
• Cancellations one week prior to the visit. If the visit has not been cancelled in time, the full price will be charged.
• Minimum group size: 5 people. If the group is smaller, the price for 5 people is charged as the entrance fee.

Please note! Villa Kokkonen is a protected building, as are its furnishings. The Villa is not available for private events.
